Council support for new schoolThe provision of educational facilities is not usually the responsibility of Local Government. However, in Playford in South Australia, the community need was so pronounced that Council went to bat to acquire support and funding for this vital community resource. The result of their efforts is a unique educational institution, a cooperative venture involving Council, the Anglican and Catholic Churches and Hickinbotham Homes Pty Ltd. Experiencing rapid growth, an educational facility within the St Andrews Farm area was considered essential for young families moving into the area. This need coincided with a desire by the Anglican and Catholic Schools Commissions to establish a school in South Australia which would be jointly funded providing ecumenical education. Following a special public meeting convened by Council, the strength of community support for a new school gave Council a solid basis on which to lobby State and Federal authorities. By developing strong links with the community and educational providers, Council was able to demonstrate community support for the college and clarify issues raised. Approval was granted last year and construction commenced in time to receive 200 Year 7 students at the start of this year. St Columba College - Andrews Farm is a pioneering achievement, being the first joint Anglican and Catholic school in the State and providing, a model for future educational facilities. Without the strong support of the City of Playford, working hand in hand with other advocates for the school, it would still be a dream rather than a functional education facility providing for the families of Playford.
