Government National Report
1995-96 Report on the Operation of the
Local Government (Financial Assistance) Act 1995
The Local Government National Report was published for the
first time in December 1996 and was prepared in accordance with
Section 16 of the Local Government (Financial Assistance) Act 1995.
The Report relates to the 1995-96 financial year - a year in which
the Commonwealth provided $1.164 billion in untied financial
assistance grants to local government.
The Report includes:
- an overview of local government that highlights its diversity,
the major sources of income and areas of expenditure and the range
of services for which it is responsible;
- a description of how the financial assistance grants are
determined and distributed to individual councils by the grants
commissions in each State and the Northern Territory;
- the actual financial assistance grant paid to Councils in
1995-96 listed together with the estimated grants for 1996-97;
- brief description of initiatives to improve local government
service delivery to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
communities; and
- background information on measures to improve local government
performance.
In addition, there are details on the 1996 revision of the
Australian Classification of Local Governments and maps showing the
boundaries of each Local Government at December 1996. The 1996-97
Local Government National Report is currently being produced and is
expected to be available in November this year.
