Playing in comfort at Mount Isa

Sport is popular everywhere in Australia particularly in regional cities and towns where opportunities for alternative recreation may be limited. Queensland's Mount Isa is no exception. Sport has strong traditions in the City which boasts a number of high achievers including golfer Greg Norman.

Residents of all ages usually participate in more than one form of sporting activity. However, with particularly hot weather, some sports activities can damage health rather than promote it.

With this in mind, in 1995 Mount Isa City Council resolved to provide $100,000 towards civil engineering works for a new facility which could accommodate a wide range of activities in indoor comfort. Up to this time, in spite of community support and enthusiasm, the Multipurpose Recreation Centre was still just a tin shed.

Following Council's determination, funds were raised through industry, business clubs and government including Council, Mount Isa Mines Ltd, Mount Isa Irish Club and the Mount Isa Basketball Association.

The community raised $80,000 towards construction costs. Many local people and associations still contribute 'in kind' or dollar sponsorship towards its costs. The result has been the completion of a state of the art facility accommodating basketball, volleyball, netball, soccer sand hockey.

The main stadium seats 500 spectators. Theirs' and players' comfort is assured with the inclusion of an airconditioned bar and multipurpose room providing views of the courts, an indoor eating area, kiosk and an occasional care centre for children.

Architects of the project drew inspiration for their design and colour from the City's central industry in the mine shafts and the 'rich and earthy tones' of the surrounding landscape. The new Centre was officially opened in June and is available for numerous activities, including promotions, conferences and concerts.
