Horsham welcomes 'Port Power'Ever since Australian Rules football has become a national sport, each weekend diehard fans traverse the country giving their teams valuable support. While many people choose to fly, a large number take the opportunity for a weekend away by driving interstate, stopping en route to enjoy the hospitality of towns along the way. Aiming to make the most of opportunities for interstate cooperation and friendship, is the Victorian Rural City of Horsham, conveniently situated on the Western Highway about half way between Melbourne and Adelaide. In a welcoming gesture, during the Easter holidays when Port Adelaide played Collingwood at the MCG, Council, together with the local Rotary Club, Horsham Regional Tourism Inc and the Horsham Regional Business Association, set up a van to distribute free tea, coffee and biscuits as well as local tourist information to travellers. In addition, a competition was run for Port Power supporters where they could win two nights accommodation and meal package in Horsham. A sign reading, 'Welcome Port Power, Make Horsham your Stopover' greeted motorists as they entered the town. Response from both the Port Adelaide Club and their supporters has been very appreciative of the warm welcome extended. Horsham Mayor, Councillor Delahunty said that the Club has advised him that it supports the development of an alliance between the Port Adelaide Football Club and the residents and businesses of Horsham. A former senior player with the Essendon Football Club Councillor Delahunty currently is negotiating to stage a practice match between Essendon and Port Adelaide at Horsham early in 1998.
