Tenth National Awards for Innovation in Local GovernmentAddressing delegates at the recent Awards ceremony in Canberra, Minister for Local Government, the Hon Warwick Smith MP, said the Awards provide an excellent opportunity for Local Councils to demonstrate their resourcefulness and creativity. He added that innovations such as those which are being recognised in the Awards this year are vital if Councils are to meet challenges of today and those which will arise in the future. Over 240 entries were received in the five categories Environment; Organisational Practices; Information Technology; Leisure and Community Services; and Engineering and Infrastructure. The major Awards this year carried cash prizes of $20,000, with the category winners each receiving $10,000. Warwick Smith noted that the entries were of a high standard, presenting difficulties for judges when it came to choosing the winners. He expressed hope that information about the winning entries will prove an inspiration for other Councils to adopt innovative ideas and practices. Information on all entries will be available through NOLG's home page on the internet (http://www.environment.gov.au/nolg.html).
