Palmerston residents have their say in shaping new town centre

Widespread public consultation has been the key to the Palmerston Urban Landscape Master Plan. Under the scheme, Palmerston Town Council in the Northern Territory, will revamp the town centre using funding provided by the Northern Territory Government and support from the Council's Mainstreet Advisory Committee, Palmerston Towards Tomorrow.

Major changes will see a redevelopment of Frances Mall, changes to Goyder Square, Water Tower developments, improved road safety with better visibility, additional car parking, provision of street furniture, and facilities for youth.

With one of the fastest population growth rates in the country, the town centre's development since the mid 1980's had taken place in a piecemeal fashion.

Initial surveys conducted among residents indicated people were keen to see an active focal point for community activity in a central location. Now a planned and comprehensive approach will see the development of a more inviting and vibrant heart to the town.

The Urban Enhancement Committee, which steered the development of the Plan, included representatives from the Northern Territory Government, Council engineers, representatives from the army which has a substantial presence in the Town, local business and developers, and interested individuals.

At a series of public consultations, residents have had the opportunity to raise issues and debate proposals presented in a draft Master Plan. At the last public forum, conducted by Palmerston Towards Tomorrow in February a unanimous vote saw the Master Plan accepted.

Following a final report to Council and the Northern Territory Government, work will soon commence. Ultimately, the scheme will see a better looking, more pedestrian friendly town centre which will attract more people and promote investment.

"The area will look good and serve residents better with improved facilities," said Karen Kilmartin, Palmerston Towards Tomorrow Coordinator. As the project is ongoing suggestions, proposals and ideas from the public are still being encouraged.
