Information Technology benefits for remote areas

Bringing the advantages of computer technology to the community, and particularly local businesses, is the aim of Tambo Shire's Computer and Internet Awareness Raising program.

Economic and Youth Development Officer, Fia Adams, said computer use in this area of Queensland has been quite low due to having a population of 700 people and the area's isolation.

"A small population and being at a long distance from large centre access to computers and the Internet is very limiting," she said.

"In turn this has led to a low level of awareness about the benefits of information technology."

Fia said those most familiar with computers are often schoolchildren.

"Through this project, Council intends to use their familiarity and skills to show adults how easy it is learn to use computers effectively," she said. "The training sessions will also help young people reinforce their own skills."

The first stage of the project will be to conduct public meetings to inform people about computer technology. The meetings will feature guest speakers and demonstrators, including the schoolchildren.

Training sessions will follow. Surveys and interviews will be used to evaluate the success of the program and identify any further needs.

Fia said businesses in the area, 900 kilometres from Brisbane and two hours drive from the nearest large town, would benefit enormously by being able to access the sort of information that is available on the Internet, and through streamlining their accounting and other procedures.

"In addition they may be able to cut travel and other expenses which they now incur in the course of accessing supplies," she said.
