Hobart Skills Centre

A coincidence of needs has brought about a productive partnership between Hobart City Council and TAFE Tasmania.

Faced with the need to find a new home when the site of Council's existing nursery was sold, the idea for establishing a larger regional nursery was developed.

This also provided the opportunity to set up a regional work based training facility in keeping with the Federal Government's Training Reform Agenda.

Simultaneously, Hobart TAFE's Horticulture Department needed a bigger venue to fulfil their Competency Based curriculum requirements.

The result is a sharing of educational facilities at the former Works Tasmania site in Mornington. This is now known as the Hobart Skills Centre.

With funding from the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA), the site has recently been completed and accredited as a training facility.

Hobart City Council is now registered under the Australian Recognition Framework as a Registered Training Organisation allowing Council to deliver nationally accredited qualifications to their own staff and others.

These include Workplace Assessor and Workplace Trainer Category 1, Business Administration Certificate 3 and 4, and Diploma Level Frontline Management.
