Strategic approach brings a trail of touristsA partnership between Huon Valley and Kingborough Councils, the Tasmanian State Government and tourist bodies has resulted in a marked increase in tourism in the Huon Valley region. At the heart of the long term strategic plan to improve the area's economic viability is the Huon Trail. This was launched by Premier Jim Bacon in March. The Trail is a driving route. It takes visitors to 24 colourfully marked sites detailing the area's history and culture. It also links to other activities such as art and craft markets, recreational boating and accommodation. The sites highlight significant aspects of the Huon Valley, including special flora and fauna; traditional industries, such as fishing, forestry and agriculture; characters; and events which have shaped the area's development. Brochures, a video and an Internet site provide visitors with information about the Trail and related attractions. "The Huon Trail is a journey through our landscape and history, an exploration of our waterways and wilderness, and a friendly introduction to our local people," said Huon Valley Mayor Greg Norris. Marketed as 'a journey of diversity and discovery; the Trail and the strategic approach taken by Huon Valley and Kingborough to promoting the region's attractions and products, has resulted in a 9.6% increase in interstate and overseas visitors to the area. Marketing and Tourism Manager, Rob Cleary, said success resulted from the Councils taking a leadership role. He said the Councils' decision to adopt long term strategic planning, their coordination of the various agencies interested in the area's economic development, and the appointment of a professional tourism officer have all contributed to the professional development and marketing of the region.
