Hume City Council welcomes major newspaper groupLeadership in economic development by Hume City Council has brought The Age's new $220 million press plant to Tullamarine on Melbourne's northern fringe. A recent tree planting ceremony involving Victorian Premier Steve Bracks marked the start of the construction program. Then Mayor Jack Ogilvie said the $220 million facility, located in the City's Global Business Park, will create as many as 600 jobs during construction. "In a major coup by Hume City Council, the announcement of the facility's development capped off many months of hard work by Council officers and consultants for John Fairfax Holdings to secure the investment and the site," he said. Hume City Council welcomed the first news of the investment in June, last year. It reinforced the positive trends occurring in development and investment throughout the City. Developing effective partnerships with local business and industry has been an increasing priority for Hume City Council. "Council makes every effort to attract investors through streamlined planning and approvals processes, and a range of strategic economic development activities, such as one on one support and business networking opportunities," said David Hall, General Manager Economic Development "We strongly encourage the development of high quality industrial development sites that investors can have confidence in, such as the Global Business Park and Northcorp Industry Park in Broadmeadows." The press plant facility is expected to be fully functional by 2001. The Age's editorial, advertising and administrative operations will remain at their Spencer Street offices, with the two sites to be connected by high speed digital data communications links.
