Active Australia Local Government pilot projects

In recognition of the contribution Councils can make to Active Australia, the National Office of Local Government and the Australian Sports Commission funded 15 Active Australia Local Government Network members to carry out Active Australia projects.

The Brisbane Active and Out There project is an example of the unique and innovative activities implemented.

Brisbane &endash; Active and Out There

The impetus for this project stemmed from the spectacular response Brisbane City Council had to their program Growing Old and Living Dangerously (GOLD).

The success and take up rate of GOLD proved that there was a huge unmet demand for older adult recreation in the Brisbane area.

Brisbane City Council received funding to research how they could best meet the needs of the over 50s and provide innovative, challenging and creative programs rather than the traditional activities most often provided, such as bowls, bingo and bus trips.

A resource manual and training program was developed to address the current research on older adults, and to provide best practice models. It is full of good ideas and hints on how best to provide the most appropriate programs using the skills and resources available in the community.

To find out more about this great resource contact Gina Manning at the Brisbane City Council on (07) 3403 6199.
