Local Government joins nationwide Centenary of Federation celebrationIn 2001 Australia celebrates its 100th anniversary as a nation. The celebrations for the Centenary of Federation will feature activities and projects involving all Australians. Many of the celebrations will involve local Councils and Shires. However, one project is unique in that all of Australia's local Councils will be invited to participate. This special project is Peoplescape, one of the two national projects being produced by the National Council for the Centenary of Federation. In early 2001, Australians will be asked to nominate their own personal hero. This hero could be a local community figure, a family member or someone with a state, territory or national profile. A total of 5,000 people will be selected. Those whose nomination has been selected will be invited to decorate a life size, person shaped 'canvas', to represent their hero. The figures will then be sent to Canberra where they will be installed within the National Capital's Parliamentary Triangle, on the slopes of Parliament House and down Federation Mall. The result will be a stunning community artwork, charged with visual and emotional significance. The Peoplescape will be officially launched on Sunday 25 November 2001 at an event broadcast nationally from the Great Hall of Parliament House. This spectacular event will draw on Peoplescape for its meaning and inspiration. The National Council for the Centenary of Federation believes the involvement of Local Governments large and small is vital to the credibility and eventual success of Peoplescape. In August, the National Council will invite every Mayor or Council leader to be involved in the project, possibly by nominating a figure for inclusion in the Peoplescape. At the same time, project information will be sent to Councils with the aim of securing the commitment of an officer's time to assist with nurturing the selected Peoplescape makers living in their area. This information is likely to be of most interest to Council staff operating in the Community Arts and Community Development areas. In 2001, State and Territory Coordinators will be appointed to work with the identified Council Officer in each Local Government area.
