A mark in time with Stonnington Heritage TrailOn the eve of the celebration of Federation the community of Stonnington has been asked to turn their minds to contemplating those significant people, places and events that have contributed to making the City what it is today. Over 100 people who lived or had a connection to Stonnington were inspired to offer nominations they believed worthy of commemoration. Among the nominations featured are famous politicians, such as Sir Robert Menzies, artists, such as Fred Williams, and business people, such as Sidney Myer, as well as undisputed Melbourne icons including the Malvern Star Bicycle. Other gems of historical fact were unearthed in the process including the Thompson Steam Car. This was the first Australian motor car manufactured by the Thompson Motor Car Company Limited which was rolled out in High Street in Armadale. Well known business and political identities, Peter Bartels and Ches Baragwanath spearheaded the Mark in Time project. Along with Stonnington Council, they conceptualised the Stonnington Federation Trail modelled on similar concepts existing in overseas cities including London, Paris and Chicago. The Trail will comprise a large number of heritage markers spread throughout the City. These will act to herald points of historical interest interpreting them for locals and visitors in interesting and simple to read statements of fact accompanied by historical pictures. The markers have been designed in a range of complimentary sizes and forms to cater for various locations including parks and gardens, streets and building facades. The markers have been designed with public safety and longevity in mind. Cast from graffiti resistant vitreous enamel and sporting Stonnington's corporate colours and newly created heritage insignia, response to their design has already been overwhelmingly positive. The project has captured the imagination of locals at the highest level. Recently, then Acting Prime Minister, Peter Costello, was inspired to unveil the first of the markers at the Malvern Tram Depot. |
