Helping local business reap benefits from major
project
Western Australia's South West Group of Councils is
actively assisting local businesses to share in the economic activity
generated by the multi million dollar Jervoise Bay project at
Henderson.
The $250 million marine industrial project is expected to commence
construction shortly.
It will provide a dedicated site for the construction, engineering
and fabrication of supplies to the off shore oil and gas industry in
the Pilbara.
Through a consultancy, LG Net and Business Horizons, the South
West Group will compile an online listing of all businesses in the
region able to supply goods and services to the project.
Using the project title 'Industry Direct', it will directly email
advertising of all tenders to businesses. This means there will be no
need for them to scan newspapers for the information both during its
construction and its operational phase.
Director, South West Group John McIlhone said the project's
primary focus is employment.
"This project is about identifying firstly the capacity of local
small to medium sized enterprises, then matching
that capability to enhance business prospects and to improve
regional employment opportunities," he said.
"As a key stakeholder in the decision making processes that affect
the growth and development of this region Local Government needs to
be involved in the planing and management of sustainable economic
development."
With a listing of all businesses in the area, Industry Direct will
allow business to include all relevant details, including graphics
and pictures, to describe their capability.
"All the information required will be there on the website
bringing buyers and sellers together," John McIlhone said.
"It will help local business compete with offshore providers and
hopefully ensure a better, more predictable quality of product."
The project has been supported with both commitment and finance
from the South West Group of Councils, which comprises Fremantle,
Melville, East Fremantle, Cockburn, Kwinana and Rockingham Councils
and the Commonwealth Department of Employment, Workplace Relations
and Small Business.
