Craft exhibition promotes Local Government Week themeNSW Local Government Week 2000 will take on colourful hues in Lithgow where the Lithgow City Council and the Lithgow Craft Group have combined to invite entries for the 3rd Natural Fibres Competition, Exhibition & Sale. Entrants are required to submit work based on the theme of Local Government Week which this year is 'Local Government 2000 &endash; Your Winning Edge'. Lithgow's Coordinator of Local Government Week, Deborah McGrath, said the competition was initiated from a desire to assist local craft workers to show and sell their works. It has been slowly building support since its inception in 1998. This year, with wider advertising, entries are expected from as far away as Queensland. In conjunction with the competition, an exhibition of approximately 100 quilts from the Quilts 2000 project will be staged. This project was launched in February to raise money and awareness for the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games. Deborah said, as the Paralympics is part of Council's Australia Day promotion, the two events dovetail nicely. "The competition and exhibition are not just a matter of promoting local products," she said. "We want to promote Australian products such as fine wool and also Australian charities." She said the event raises money to provide equipment for beginners in craft who are not sure if they will pursue the activity. It also helps to raise the profile of the cultural identity of the area. Music will accompany the exhibition. This will feature of a chorale and string performance, an initiative of the Arts Council Subcommittee of Council.
