Innovation in Local Government - Are you ready for the National Awards?Whether you represent a larger municipality or the smallest, remote rural community, the National Office of Local Government wants to hear from you for the year 2000 National Awards for Innovation in Local Government. The Awards are a Federal Government initiative that aim to identify, reward and promote innovation and leading practice in Local Government. Since their inception in 1986, they have attracted thousands of entries that have received both national and international attention. Winners for this year's Awards will be announced at the Australian local Government Association's General Assembly to be held in Canberra in early December. Application forms will be available from 28 May 2000, when the Minister for Regional Services, Territories and Local Government, Senator Ian Macdonald, launches the Year 2000 Awards at the IMM National Congress at the Melbourne Convention Centre. All Councils will soon receive a booklet entitled A Guide to Leading Practice, that gives full details on last year's 338 entries - nearly 100 more than in the previous year. This Guide will help to concentrate your attention on one of the most successful ways that innovation in Local Government throughout Australia is recognised. With the Guide, Councils will receive application kits. Extra copies of the Guide and application kits will also be available on request. This year there is a new category in the Awards for Youth - to recognise innovation in programmes and projects which benefit young people and encourage young people's involvement in community leadership and development. And there is also a Special Award for Support for Remote Communities - to recognise innovative endeavours to overcome the difficulties in delivering services to remote communities.
