National roads campaign

Councils throughout Australia are rallying to support a $2 million national campaign aimed at boosting federal funding for roads in the lead up to the Federal Election expected next year.

"State Local Government Associations are approaching their constituents to contribute to a fighting fund to lead an alliance of trade, industry, professional and community organisations in a comprehensive campaign," said Australian Local Government Association President, Councillor John Ross.

"Councils are fed up with meeting most of the cost burden in improving Australia's road network, while successive Federal Governments of both political persuasions ignore the very real needs. It's the first time we've undertaken a campaign of this magnitude. We are determined that, which ever parties are elected to power in the House of Representatives and the Senate, they will understand there is a great need for action to improve urban, rural and regional roads.

"On December 6, at the ALGA National General Assembly in Canberra, we will release details of a comprehensive, apolitical campaign which will concentrate heavily on 52 federal seats where a margin of five percent or less exists between the parties.

"We will be leaving no stone unturned to ensure the alliance's voice is heard. When electors go to the ballot box next year, we will have ensured that the need for a boost in funding for Australia's roads is one of the most prominent public issues."
