Keeping Manly's beaches clean has never been easier

Manly Council's Waste and Cleansing Group has taken delivery of a new piece of equipment that will ensure Manly's beaches not only look better, but they will be cleaner too. The new 'Beach Rake' will be gentler on the beach, increase safety and reduce labour costs.

A single person can operate it and at a much greater speed than Council's other beach cleaning equipment. This means more beach area in Manly will be cleaned more often.

The Beach Rake is towed behind a Council tractor, removing material from the beach, without removing sand. With rows of tines (slender pointed projections like fingers) on a conveyor belt debris, large and small, is picked up. Unlike other equipment, the Beach Rake can work in wet sand allowing cleaning of the beaches all year round.

"The Beach Rake enables Council's Waste and Cleansing team to clean Ocean Beach, Shelly Beach, Little Manly Beach, Forty Baskets, Clontarf and Sandy Bay every day with only one person," said Mayor Jean Hay.

"Before, we could only do about a third of this work even with three people on the job.

"The quality of work undertaken by this new machine greatly improves on our previous beach cleaning methods and further demonstrates to the Manly community and our millions of visitors each year Manly Council is committed to having the best maintained and cleanest beaches in Sydney."
