Frankston's Federation project provides an artistic vision

The incorporation of an imaging and projection component in Frankston City Council's new Community Arts Centre aims to give passersby in the street an immediate view of those audio visual works created within the centre.

The Centre is being developed and constructed as Council's contribution to Federation celebrations. It is partly funded under the Commonwealth Government's Celebrations of the Centenary of Federation grants program.

This innovative arts centre will incorporate the imaging and projection components as part of the permanent structure of the building. The street elevation of the building will have a glazed cube façade that will receive large scale projected images.

Before embarking on this multifaceted arts project, Frankston City Council undertook market research.

This identified the need for a high quality, accessible exhibition, installation and display space that could be used by the broader community, including schools and colleges.

Mayor Councillor Mark Conroy said building works are under way on the newest and possibly most exciting addition to Frankston City's cultural precinct.

"This centre will be a leader in reshaping the concept of community arts facilities in Australia," he said.

"It will incorporate the capacity for contemporary electronic and digital art making and will engage and excite those involved in more traditional art and craft practice.

"The potential for links to multidisciplinary art making and the far reaching implications of digital art forms and the Internet, are ripe for exploration."

"While the Centre will fulfil a variety of practical functions through its flexibility, it will also feature a tough and funky feel which will appeal to the creative energies of both our young art makers as well as the more experienced practitioners."

Work on the new facility is underway with the Centre expected to be opened in April 2001.
