IPWEA National Training Programs“The need to use our resources more efficiently is more paramount than ever before,” said Chief Executive Officer, Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia (IPWEA), Chris Champion. “It is timely to revisit how we plan the management of our assets, and again review the way services are delivered to our communities. “One of the initiatives of the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia (IPWEA) National Office is to develop training programs that can then be delivered through the IPWEA State Divisions.” He said a number of programs have been developed to date with others in the pipeline. The ‘How To’ of Asset Management Planning Dates are now available for these two day workshops which will have a particular focus on ‘How do I prepare an asset management plan for my organisation’. The workshops will build on the content of IPWEA’s International Infrastructure Management Manual.
Service Delivery Workshops A very successful two day seminar titled ‘Service Delivery in a Changing Environment – Exploring Your Options’ was conducted in Sydney late last year by IPWEA in conjunction with Morrison Low Consultants. The seminar outlined many of the options available for service delivery, including inhouse models (traditional Council department, business units, commercialisation); buying in of services (outsourcing); and cooperative arrangements (joint servicing, alliance partnering). No one particular model was recommended. Rather, the emphasis was on how to go about selecting the model best suited to each community’s local needs. A feature of these workshops was the practical case studies. Further Service Delivery seminars will be held in Brisbane on 22-23 May; and in Sydney on 22-23 July 2002. A more detailed look at the ‘How To’ of business units is also planned for 15 November in conjunction with the NSW State Conference. If there is sufficient interest from other States for these programs, IPWEA intends to hold further workshops.
