Improved access rewarded

Perth’s Town of Vincent is rewarding the efforts of the community in improving accessibility within the community via the Town of Vincent Improved Access Awards. The awards are presented annually and publicly acknowledge the improvements local businesses, individuals, community groups and organisations have made in the local area.

“Council feels that it is important to reward people and businesses who are making positive changes which complement Council’s policy of creating a fully accessible environment,” said Council’s Disability Services Officer, Debra Casey.

The awards include the Recreation Network Community Group Award. This recognises a community group that has made a significant effort to include people with disabilities as full and valued members of their group activities.

“Nominations for an award can be made for any individual or an organisation that has made things easier for people with disabilities to use facilities in the Town,” said Debra Casey “It could be a business that has incorporated good access into their building, someone who has offered good service or for provision of information in accessible formats.”

Nominations for the awards are called for each August, with information posted on the Town’s website. This year’s awards will be presented at an official function at the Town of Vincent on the International Day of People with a Disability, on 3 December 2002.
