Greenhouse emissions cut by REFIT kit

Lake Macquarie Mayor, Councillor Greg Piper, is tackling climate change and water conservation by having an energy and water REFIT kit installed in his family home.

Councillor Piper is encouraging households in Lake Macquarie to play their part in reducing their impact on the environment.

The REFIT kit is designed to help households reduce their effect on the environment by using water and energy more efficiently while saving money. REFIT is a shared initiative of Lake Macquarie City Council, EnergyAustralia, Hunter Water, and other Lower Hunter Councils.

The kit comes with a water saving showerhead, two compact fluorescent light globes and a garden hose trigger nozzle for the subsidised price of $39. The REFIT kit is valued at $120. Installation is free and includes an energy and water audit to identify where further savings might be possible.

Councillor Piper said installing a REFIT kit is a simple way that we can all reduce greenhouse gas emissions and water use.

“Each REFIT kit installed can prevent 5.5 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions from entering the atmosphere over the lifetime of the products,” he said. “A water saving showerhead uses about half the water compared to a standard showerhead.”
