Liberty swing increases leisure access

To demonstrate its commitment to building a more inclusive community, Rockhampton City Council has recently installed a swing specifically designed for people with a disability. With up to 20 per cent of the Rockhampton community having some level of disability, Council has been working to improve access to its various facilities and services.

Council’s first Liberty Swing allows people who are wheelchair bound to experience the feeling of having a swing. The swing compartment is built to safely accommodate a wheelchair.

The Liberty Swing was designed by Australian inventor, Wayne Devine, and is manufactured in Australia. When funding for the Liberty Swing was sourced from the Variety Club of Queensland, Council committed additional funding for the installation of this swing and purchase and installation of a second Liberty Swing for the Kershaw Gardens. This provides a swing in both the northside and southside of the City.

The first of Rockhampton’s Liberty Swings was officially launched on 17 July as part of Disability Action Week.
