Crime Prevention – nationally endorsed units of competency

At the November 2003 meeting of the Australian and New Zealand Crime Prevention Ministerial Forum, Ministers agreed to a Strategic Framework for Crime Prevention and Community Safety 2003–2006, for Australia and New Zealand. One of the priorities in achieving crime prevention and community safety, articulated in the Framework, was ‘workforce development’.

This has seen the development of six nationally accredited units of competency in crime prevention being endorsed within the recently reviewed Local Government Training Package – LGA04. The newly developed units are set out in the adjacent table.

The intended purpose of these newly endorsed crime prevention units of competency is to provide a nationally consistent benchmark of skills required for a range of workers whose employment is in the area of crime prevention and community safety, or who have an interest in crime prevention.

The National Crime Prevention Programme, an initiative of the Australian Government has funded ALGT to assist industry stakeholders with the implementation of these competency standards.

Over the next six months, a number of activities will occur including national workshops, case study publications and electronic newsletter updates.
