Bayside’s shared path fills a missing link

On 23 October, Bayside City Council Mayor, Councillor Craig Tucker, and the State Member for Higginbotham, Noel Pullen, cut a ribbon on the elevated boardwalk of the Brighton Beach shared path to officially open this missing link in the Bay Trail.

The $1.5 million project, which Bayside City Council and Parks Victoria jointly funded, stretches from Bay Road, Brighton to Middle Brighton Baths – some 680 metres. The event celebrates the completion of a project that Melbournians have been talking about for more than 15 years, as the “missing link” in the Bay Trail.

This shared path enables users to walk, stroll, ride or skate off road from Altona to Beaumaris enjoying coastal views of Port Phillip Bay. No greater array of walkers, skaters and cyclists and their machines will be found in Melbourne.

Key design elements of this state of the art shared path include:

• about 100 metres of elevated boardwork constructed across the water and beach
• approximately 5,800 cubic metres of sand used to assist with new beach construction from Sandown Street to Royal Brighton Yacht Club
• around 125 metres of rock wall constructed to protect the new boardwalk
• provision of self closing gates and fencing defining an off leash dog zone on the spit
• new groynes at Middle Brighton Baths and Royal Brighton Yacht Club
• more than 10,000 hardy natives plants – from Bayside Community Nursery – to support the revegetation of the landscape.
